SHOWTIME has released the official trailer for its upcoming drama series, American Gigolo, which stars Jon Bernthal (We Own This City) as Julian Kaye, the titular character. The series is an adaptation of the 1980 film of the same name where Julian was played by Emmy Award nominee Richard Gere (MotherFatherSon).
Additional cast members in the series include Gretchen Mol (Seven Seconds) as Michelle Straton, Lizzie Brocheré (Falling Water) as Isabelle, Gabriel LaBelle (Brand New Cherry Flavor) as Johnny, and Leland Orser (Blindspotting) as Stratton, and Emmy Award winner Rosie O’Donnell (Run The World) as Detective Sunday, per SHOWTIME’s press release. Alex Fernandez (Good Trouble) will play Panish alongside Mark Mahoney (Pam and Tommy) as McGregor, Yolonda Ross (The Get Down) as Lizzy, Laura Liguori (Ugly Betty) as Elizabeth ShannonHouse, Emmy Award winner Wayne Brady (The Good Fight) as Lorenzo, Sandrine Holt (Mr. Robot) as Olga, and Taylor Blackwell (Resident Alien) as Lisa Beck.
The series follows Julian Kaye (Bernthal) after his release from prison following a wrongful conviction 15 years prior. Once released, Julian is forced to navigate his newly complicated relationships as he struggles to reconcile with his identity in the past and present, as described in a press release from SHOWTIME. When a detective (O’Donnell) searches for the truth about the case that put Julian behind bars, she discovers a monstrous conspiracy which sets them both on a new path.
American Gigolo is executive produced by ten-time Emmy Award winner Jerry Bruckheimer (Hightown), who also served as a producer on the 1980 film. Additional executive producers include ten-time Emmy Award winner Jonathan Littman (CSI: Vegas), KristieAnne Reed (Lucifer), Russell Rothberg (Foundation), and Nikki Toscano (Hunters) who also serves as showrunner. Toscano replaced previous showrunner David Hollander (How We Roll) who was let go from the series following a misconduct investigation.
American Gigolo will premiere on Friday, September 9th, on-demand and on SHOWTIME’s streaming platforms. The season premiere will debut on cable on Sunday, September 11th at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME.
