Showtime App Shutting Down After Merging With Paramount+

According to Deadline, the standalone app for Showtime will be shutting down. This comes along with Showtime being merged with Paramount+. it will completely dissapear on april 30th.

Deadline reported that the homepage for Showtime posted, “This app will shut down on 4/30/2024. Paramount+ is the new streaming home for SHOWTIME. Get the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME plan. Try 7 days free, then $11.99/month. Get started at Paramountplus.com” it said, with a button to try it for free.”

With the new merger, Deadline said, the service will be Paramount+ with Showtime for $11.99 monthly after a one-week trial. Paramount+ on it’s own is roughly $5.99 a month.

Deadline also cited that back in January, Showtime‘s network was officially rebranded and relaunched in a package with Paramount+. Showtime had been launched during the time of cable TV, nearly four decades ago. This meant that the two apps would would become one singular streaming service. The parent company, paramount global, said that the move was “the first of its kind multiplatform brand that integrates streaming and linear content.”

Showtime has also had other recent news, scuh as the departure of the CEO David Nevins over a year ago. He had been the long-term CEO for the network. After, that, Showtime began to downsize their network. Layoffs occured when the cable network merged with MTV Entertainment Studios, which has since rebranded as Paramount+. As this occured, the slate for shows on the network was paired down, said Deadline.

Showtime also witnessed the end of Showtime Sports last October, deadline stated. Like fellow platform HBO, Showtime has experienced issues keeping up with the cost of sports programming. The end of Showtime Sports also occured because its parent company, Paramount Global, was making significant investments in streaming. This news come via Deadline. Fans now wonder what the future of the streaming platform holds with this merger.
