Showtime Announces ‘Homeland’ Season 6 Will Premiere in January 2017

Season 6 of Homeland will be premiering later than usual.

Today Showtime announced that the Emmy and Golden Globe winning series, Homeland, will premiere in January 2017. This is a change for the hit series which normally premieres in the fall rather than mid-year.

Production for season 6 is set to begin this August in New York City. This will be the first time in the last two season that the series has been stateside. Between seasons 4 and 5, the drama was filmed and took place in South Africa and Berlin.

Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Claire Danes, Emmy nominee Rupert Friend, Oscar winner and Emmy nominee F. Murray Abraham, and Emmy and Tony Award winner Mandy Patinkin will once again star in season 6 of Homeland.

“We are proud that Homeland has been so consistently recognized for its excellence with awards and critical acclaim, but we are in awe of how the series fearlessly mines the geopolitics of our complicated world and translates that into compelling human drama,” said David Nevins, President and CEO, Showtime Networks Inc. “Under Alex Gansa’s brilliant leadership, Homeland has shown an uncanny ability to reinvent itself which makes us supremely confident that this show will remain as distinctive, relevant and cutting edge as anything on television for as long as these producers want to continue.”

After the events of season 5 of Homeland, the series will resume several months later and show Carrie Mathison (Danes) living in Brooklyn, NY (thus the change of production location). While in New York, Carrie has begun working for a foundation that provides aid to Muslims living in the United States. Season 6 of Homeland will take place after the presidential election and span the time between election day and the presidential inauguration. The timeline for the upcoming season is another reason why the premier was pushed back to early 2017. The timing of the new season will elaborate on the complex and delicate struggle in the government that comes with a change in the country’s power.

Homeland is available to stream on Amazon Video or Showtime through Hulu.
