According to Variety, showrunners of Showtime’s Yellowjackets, Ashley Lyle (The Originals), Bart Nickerson (Dispatches from Elsewhere), and Jonathan Lisco (Animal Kingdom), gave an update on the status of the third season of the series. The update for the thrilling survival series was given during a Q&A for SAG-AFTRA nomination committee members on Wednesday.
According to Variety, when the Writers Guild of America’s strike commenced, it resulted in the stop of the production of the third season. Lyle now said, “We’re deep in the writing. Everybody came back so incredibly enthusiastic, raring to go, and creatively invigorated. We’re having so much fun and are very excited about it.”
Yellowjackets is a series with a dual timeline narrative that follows the story of a girl’s high school soccer team that survived a plane crash and then attempted to survive in the vast Ontario wilderness. The series follows the girls who deal with many hardships such as trying to survive as well as dealing with cannibalistic clans. On the other side of the coin, their adult counterparts 25 years later tell the gruesome truth about their survival.
According to Variety, the showrunners were joined by some of the younger cast members. Liv Hewson (Santa Clarita Diet), Samantha Hanratty (Shameless), Courtney Eaton (Gods of Egypt), and Sophie Nelisse (Close) answered questions regarding the series. It was the first time any of the cast had been together since the beginning of the writer’s strike.
Hanratty, who plays teen Misty, was asked about her monologue from the film Steel Magnolias she delivered in an episode where the girls threw teen Shauna a baby shower.
“I haven’t seen it yet,” Hanratty admitted about the classic 1989 film. “Give me until Season 3 and I swear I’m going to have every monologue down.”
The moderator also asked about how the young actresses handle the collaboration with the adult actresses who play them in the future.
“It’s a bit of a head trip being someone’s point of reference. We don’t have to worry about matching anybody, they have to match us,” Hewson stated via Variety. Hewson plays teen Van opposite Lauren Ambrose’s (Six Feet Under) adult version.
The series cast also includes Melanie Lynskey (Togetherness) as adult Shauna, Nelisse as teenage Shauna, Tawny Cypress (Brooklyn’s Finest) as adult Taissa, Jasmin Savoy Brown (Scream) as teenage Taissa, Christina Ricci (Wednesday) as adult Misty, Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear) as adult Natalie, Sophie Thatcher (Prospect) as teenage Natalie, Simone Kessel as adult Lottie, Eaton as teenage Lottie, and many others.
Currently, there is no date for when production will start for the third season. All current episodes of Yellowjackets are available to stream on Showtime and Paramount+.
