The Voice, which has proved to be incredibly popular since its start in 2011, is adding another country artist besides Blake Sheldon to the mix. According to E! News Online, Shania Twain will serve as key mentor for the remainder of the twelfth season. The season premiere on February 27 was watched by 13.03 million viewers. Twain, who has previously served as a mentor on American Idol, is expected to appear later this month, in the final episodes of the season.
On her Twitter and Instagram account, Twain said:
“Excited to announce that I’ll appear on @nbcthevoice this month, as a mentor to the finalists”
As the top-selling female country artist of all time, Twain brings with her not only artistic talent, but an undeniably commercially successful career. In her career, Twain has won five Grammy Awards, and is the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums certified Diamond by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America). But her success has not come without struggle. As a young Canadian, she suffered from poverty, sometimes went without food, and eventually lost both her parents to a car crash.
Twain became known for her fusion of country and pop, as well as being a symbol of female independence, with female country music artists like Dixie Chicks and Taylor Swift following in her path. Twain’s album Come on Over, which was her third album, became the best-selling studio album of all time by a female act in any genre, and also the best-selling country album of all time, selling around 40 million copies worldwide. The Queen of Country Pop retired in 2004, citing vocal exhaustion, and moved to Switzerland. However, she has since done a farewell tour, and is now expecting a new album to be released in May.
Twain joins a long history of musical celebrities to grace the successful competition show. Past key advisers for The Voice, including Taylor Swift, Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Rihanna, Celine Dion, John Legend, Cher, Bette Midler, and more. Twain will serve as key adviser to the final twelve contestants.
