Seth Meyers (Saturday Night Live) is getting a new special on HBO. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Late Night host’s newest comedy special airs on HBO this fall. This startup special was filmed last June in Chicago at The Vic Theater.
As new comedy specials are in high demand ever since the rise of popular comedians taking their material to streaming services, Meyers found huge success in his Netflix special, Lobby Baby. With the news of this new special, Meyers jokingly described the comedy as something that will have, let’s just say, a strong impact on the viewers.
“Critics say it’s the special my kids will be talking about in therapy twenty years from now!” he said via The Hollywood Reporter.
Nina Rosenstein, the Executive VP at HBO Programming, Late Night and Specials, emphasized how excited HBO is to work with someone as talented, charismatic, and admirable as Meyers. She also praised the special itself, saying that it will sit well with audiences and be a very fun comedy special to sit back and enjoy.
“As longtime fans, we’re so happy to partner with Seth on his first HBO special,” Rosenstein said according to The Hollywood Reporter. “He’s such a charismatic storyteller and we’ve always loved the way he reaches people on such a personal level. This special is endlessly relatable and so much fun to watch.”
Meyers told THR that writing and performing standup comedy is a totally different world than writing and performing for late-night television. He expressed how challenging it is and how standup makes one sharp and alert.
“It’s a totally different muscle. I also think there’s a risk when you have an incredibly talented writing staff of just getting a little soft — you can kind of ride off of their talents. And because you also owe it to your writers to constantly be trying to sharpen your delivery system, standup is great because it forces you to do that.”
The new comedy special, which is yet to be officially titled, will be directed by Neal Brennan (Chappelle’s Show). Brennan, who is no stranger to the world of comedy, also directed Lobby Baby, which was executive produced by him, Meyers, and Mike Shoemaker (Saturday Night Live, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon), a previous showrunner for Late Night with Seth Meyers.
