Seth Meyers is a Swiftie; Late Night Host Praises Taylor Swift for Writing Her Own Opening SNL Monologue

Back in 2009, pop music icon Taylor Swift took to the stage on Saturday Night Live and not only hosted the sketch show but initially performed a very clever and impressive opening monologue that fans and audiences remember to this day 14 years later. Recently, Late Night host Seth Meyers, who was the head writer for SNL at the time, praised Swift for her work on the iconic monologue.

During Meyers’ appearance on The Howard Stern Show, he revealed to listeners that the special guest who is hosting the SNL episode typically has the writers create their monologues (except most stand-up comedians who perform a set). But Swift took the reins and wanted to switch it up. She went right into the office of SNL showrunner Lorne Michaels and performed her song titled “Monologue (La La La)” which included mentions of the infamous VMA incident with Kanye West, her public love life, and her breakup songs, and it won both Meyers and Michaels over.

“It really speaks to what a force of nature she is and the depths of her talent,” Meyers said on air. “Here’s a 19-year-old who nobody is really helping out; nobody gave her a manual of how to do that show. And yet, she came to us and said, ‘I wrote a song for the opening monologue.’ So we brought Taylor into Lorne’s [Michaels, series creator] office, and she sings this song which is not only a beautiful song by a beautiful singer, it’s a perfect SNL monologue. Fully formed.”

Meyers also added that Swift’s song was the perfect match for her opening monologue. To this day, speaks very highly of her creativity, cleverness, and comedic ideas and even puts his work down as not as good as hers.

“To this day, I’ve never had a moment like that where someone brings you a fully gift-wrapped present and it’s exactly what you need it to be. When she finished I should’ve said, ‘Now Taylor, just for you, I want to look at you and read what we had written for you just so you know how much f**king worse it was. Not only is your song great, but you cannot even begin to imagine how sh**ty what we were doing for you is compared to how great what you did for yourself is.”

Seth Meyers hosts Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC. He was in the cast of SNL for 12 seasons, in which he also wrote for the show and served as head writer up until his departure in 2014. Watch the clip of him talking about Swift below!
