The production of the second season of Netflix’s One Piece will set sail soon. Recently, news of original One Piece co-showrunner Steven Maeda’s (Lost, Day Break) departure was announced. Comicbook.com reports. Joe Tracz (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Percy Jackson and the Olympians) will replace Maeda.
According to a Deadline article, via Comicbook.com, Tracz will be the executive producer, writer, and co-showrunner of the second season of the series. He will be working alongside Matt Owens (Luke Cage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Defenders), who is the series’ official showrunner. Owens participated in the review of season one with Maeda before he left, so Owens will know what to add to keep the series on track.
According to Comicbook.com, the second season of One Piece has announced production dates, as Netflix is expected to release the series in June 2025. Tracz shared his excitement to begin working on the series’ production in a Netflix statement.
“I’ve been lucky to work on big adaptations of several beloved series, and they don’t come bigger or more beloved than One Piece,” Tracz explained, via Comicbook.com. “I’m huge fan of Oda-san’s incredible imagination and I was blown away by what the live-action team created in Season One. So it’s a dream and a joy to come aboard the Going Merry as it enters the Grand Line for an even more giant Season Two.”
Owens has also shared his own excitement to work with Tracz in this project.
“Joe has brought a wealth of enthusiasm and experience into our second season that will help take One Piece to new heights,” he explained, via Comicbook.com. “We’re incredibly lucky to have him as a co-captain of this ship. The best crew on the seas grows larger!”
The One Piece live-action is based off the original anime with the same name, which is available to stream on Hulu, Crunchyroll and Netflix, according to Comicbook.com.
