Season Two of ‘Cruel Summer’ Becomes Freeform’s Top Telecast Since 2021

Created by Bert V. Royal (Easy A, Recovery Road), the anthology series titled Cruel Summer first debuted in 2021. The first two episodes of season two premiered on June 5th, and episodes will continue to release weekly until the end of July. According to Deadline, this season of Cruel Summer is bringing in an average of 2.3 million viewers, which makes it Freeform’s most-watched telecast since the first season came out two years ago.

After each episode premieres on Freeform, they become available a day later on Hulu. As Deadline notes, when the first two episodes of the second season came out, they became Hulu’s most-watched scripted television episodes.

Set in Texas in the 1990s, the first season of Cruel Summer focuses on Jeanette Turner, played by Chiara Aurelia (Luckiest Girl Alive, Tell Me Your Secrets), and Kate Wallis, played by Olivia Holt (Kickin’ It, Status Update). When Kate goes missing, Jeanette ends up taking Kate’s position as the most popular girl in school. When Kate escapes captivity months later, she is determined to prove that Jeanette played a role in her disappearance.

The second season of Cruel Summer revolves around an entirely different storyline with new characters. Set in the Pacific Northwest, this season traces the friendships and relationships that form in the summer of 1999 as well as the mystery that changes everyone’s lives.

The newest season stars Sadie Stanley (Kim Possible, Somewhere in Queens) as Megan Landry, Lexi Underwood (Little Fires Everywhere, The First Lady) as Isabella LaRue, Griffin Cluck (Locke & Key, Big Time Adolescence) as Luke Chambers, Braeden De La Garza (The Quest, Run Hide Fight) as Brent Chambers, Sean Blakemore (The Quad, Star Trek Into Darkness) as Sheriff Jack Myer, and more.

Now, audiences can tune in weekly and see for themselves why the second season of Cruel Summer has become Freeform’s most-watched television series.
