Season 4 of Amazon’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Begins Production

After multiple COVID-19 delays, the Emmy-winning The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel has begun filming its fourth season, according to Deadline. The Prime Video series originally aimed to begin production last summer. But the rise of the coronavirus pandemic prevented taping for the show created by Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, Bunheads).

According to Deadline, the fourth season began taping today in New York with the entire main cast returning. The series stars Rachel Brosnahan (I’m Your Woman, House of Cards) as Miriam “Midge” Maisel, a housewife who embarks on a career in stand-up comedy in the late 1950s. The comedy series also stars Tony Shalhoub (Monk, Wings), Marin Hinkle (Two and a Half Men, Once and Again), Michael Zegen (Rescue Me, Boardwalk Empire), and Alex Borstein (MadTV, Family Guy). The supporting cast has included Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, Army Wives), Jane Lynch (The Weakest Link), and Kevin Pollak (The Whole Nine Yards, A Few Good Men).

The series underwent a long pre-production period, according to Deadline. Most of this time was spent building new design pieces and original costumes. Brosnahan had posted a photo of her at a fitting on Instagram back in September.

According to Deadline, some new tactics will be implemented to safeguard against the spread of the virus while on set. The show will aim to use fewer actors as extras in scenes. Instead, they will opt to utilize CGI to fill background spaces with people.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premiered in 2017 garnering much critical and commercial acclaim. After coveting Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes the same year, it stormed the 2018 Emmys. In addition to winning Best Comedy Series, Sherman-Palladino won for Outstanding Directing and Writing, while Brosnahan and Bornstein both won in their respective acting categories. Bornstein would repeat in 2019 with Shalhoub winning Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is executive produced by Sherman-Palladino and her husband, writer Daniel Palladino (The Return of Jezebel James, Over the Top).
