Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow, Lucy) made a special appearance on Saturday Night Live to portray Republican Sen. Katie Britt from Alabama. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the hit NBC comedy sketch series poked fun at the senator’s controversial remarks on President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address last Thursday.
As the cold open kicked off, The Hollywood Reporter notes that Mikey Day (Is It Cake?, Little), who portrays Joe Biden on SNL, was seen talking to Congress.
In character, Day stated, “Now tonight, I’m also gonna be talking about my predecessor, mainly because every time I say predecessor, Mike Johnson shakes his head like he just accidentally caught 30 seconds of the show Euphoria.”
The joke was about Johnson, who is the current House Speaker and was seen rolling his eyes and shaking his head during the whole duration of Biden’s speech Thursday.
Day, as Biden, then brings up the Republican rebuttal made by Sen. Britt, who said, “Anyway, you know, I’d stay here and talk to you all more, but I saw a glimpse of the Republican senator’s response to my speech and I think she’s gonna help me more than anything else I can say,” via The Hollywood Reporter, hinting at how controversial Britt’s speech became online and how several were comparing it to an SNL skit.
The skit continues with Johansson, as Britt said, “My name is Katie Britt and I have the honor of serving the great people of Alabama. But tonight I’ll be auditioning for the part of ‘Scary Mom.’ I’ll be performing an original monologue called ‘This Country is Hell.’”
She continued, “You see, I’m not just a senator, I’m a wife, a mother and the craziest bitch in the Target parking lot, worried about the future of our children. And this is why I’ve invited you into this strange empty kitchen because Republicans want me to appeal to women voters, and women love kitchens.”
Johansson as Britt, then brings up how she’s a mom and “like any mom, I’m going to do a pivot out of nowhere into a shockingly violent story about sex trafficking. Rest assured, every detail about it is real except the year, where it took place and who was president when it happened.”
During Britt’s speech on Thursday, she brought up a story of a sex trafficking victim to criticize the border policies that the Biden administration holds. However, the story proved to be inaccurate because the individual Britt was talking about was never trafficked, let alone across the border, with the occurrence happening many years prior and under the George W. Bush administration.
Johansson, as Britt, concluded her speech by saying, “Just ask yourself: are you better off today than you were four years ago, back in the good old days of 2020? The year that nothing bad happened.”
This episode’s host was Josh Brolin (The Goonies, Deadpool 2), who has hosted SNL three times, with Ariana Grande (Victorious, Sam and Cat) as the musical guest.
Brolin’s closing monologue featured him stripping down in order to take a cold plunge while on stage and him saying, as per The Hollywood Reporter, “This is my third time hosting and man, there’s just nothing like it. You know, I’ve been doing cold plunges for 20 years and the only thing that I can compare this show to is that.”
“Hosting is like jumping into an ice bath. It’s scary, it’s exhilarating, your penis is in your stomach, there’s just no way to prepare for it. So what you gotta do is just jump right in. Surrender to the discomfort.”
