The ratings and viewership numbers for the latest Saturday Night Live episode are finally in and, as Deadline reports, SNL hit a 12-year high with host Lin-Manuel Miranda and musical guest Twenty One Pilots.
The show of course opened with Miranda’s monologue, which he rapped as he broke into an SNL-themed rendition of Hamilton tune “My Shot”, while walking through the SNL studio. Here are the lyrics:

The episode averaged 7.14 million viewers, the highest number for the second SNL of a new fall season since 2004. The 7.14 million is a 1.4 million or 24% increase from the average viewership numbers of last year’s October SNL episodes.
As the premiere episode was released in the midst of the first presidential debate, SNL’s Oct. 8 episode also premiered at an apt time as it was able to use Donald Trump’s lewd commentary about women as sketch material. The public outrage over Trump’s comments indeed contributed to the episode’s strong ratings. Saturday Night Live‘s episode had great timing, leading to strong ratings. Since the Trump tape came out Friday afternoon, SNL was the first late-night show to be able to use the material, as they roasted Trump several times during the night.
The Lin-Manuel Miranda-hosted episode also drew a 5.2 Live+same day household rating in the metered markets last night and a 2.4 in adults 18-49 in the markets with local people meters. The episode has generated the show’s highest Week 2 rating in eight years in the metered markets. (Currently, the ratings exclude Charlotte, Orlando, Jacksonville, Norfolk, Raleigh-Durham and West Palm Beach, as they were on storm coverage).
As of now, this season – courtesy of this tumultuous presidential election – has brought SNL its highest ratings since the 2008 election and the Sarah Palin impressions that came with it. The Palin-centric Sept. 20, 2008 episode, hosted by James Franco, scored a 5.7 rating, matching the Oct. 1, 2011 Week 2 show hosted by Melissa McCarthy featuring musical guest Lady Antebellum.
