Sarah Michelle Gellar (Wolf Pack, Do Revenge) always shut down interviewers when asked if there could ever be a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, but now it seems she has changed her mind. At the moment, the actress is starring in the new Dexter universe prequel series Dexter: Original Sin. On Friday morning, she was interviewed on The Drew Barrymore Show and asked if she thought the show could come back, even as revival, as she agreed to the idea, The Hollywood Reporter reports.
“It’s funny. I always used to say no, because it’s in its bubble, and it’s so perfect,” Gellar said via The Hollywood Reporter. “But watching Sex and the City [sequel series, And Just Like That] and seeing Dexter, and realizing there are ways to do it, definitely does get your mind thinking, ‘Well, maybe.’”
Gellar even shared that it doesn’t have to be a prequel or a revival. “It could be anything,” the actress explained via The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s universe. And it makes you realize that in this world, we need those heroes, I think, more so than ever.” The TikTok post, in which the portion of the interview is related to Geller’s conversation with Barrymore on the talk show, is embedded below.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in a 2022 interview with SFX Magazine via Movieweb, the actress originally shut down the idea of any Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboots.
“I am very proud of the show that we created and it doesn’t need to be done,” she explained to The Hollywood Reporter. “We wrapped that up. I am all for them continuing the story because there’s the story of female empowerment. I love the way the show was left: ‘Every girl who has the power can have the power.’ It’s set up perfectly for someone else to have the power. But like I said, the metaphors of Buffy were the horrors of adolescence. I think I look young, but I am not an adolescent.”
All seven seasons of Buffy The Vampire Slayer are now available to stream on Disney+. The first few episodes of the new prequel series, Dexter: Original Sin, are available for streaming on Paramount+ and are tied to a premium subscription with Showtime.
