For the first time a television show is moving from Netflix to a linear network and producers are making the adjustments One Day at a Time. The show, One Day at a Time, was cancelled by Netflix in March despite positive critical reception and loyal fan base. The fans started a #SaveODAAT that was unable to bring the show back at Netflix, but four months after the cancellation a cable network decided to revive the series. The show was saved by Pop TV, a CBS-owned network known for Schitt’s Creek.
Executive Producers and Co-showrunners Brent Miller (America Divided) and Gloria Calderón Kellett (How I Met Your Mother) are excited to bring One Day at a Time back and they are not discouraged by the change in episode length. Kellett confirmed episodes will shrink to 21 minutes on Pop TV from the 26-28 minute episodes on Netflix, but she assures fans the heart of the show will remain the same. Kellett said, “We are really taking this as an exciting challenge to distill this information and the love and the yumminess of this family within the confines of this traditional model, and it’s really very exciting for us.”
One Day at a Time was originally a Norman Lear show that aired on CBS in the 70s. The LatinX reboot joining a CBS network felt like returning to the family for Miller who said, “I call it a family reunion, because I am thinking of my nieces and nephews (who are) so excited that we were rescued on this linear network, and they are excited to be part of the family again. Norman Lear started his career on CBS, and we’re back on CBS, so it’s a very full-circle moment.”
Few details have been released for the upcoming season of One Day at a Time, but Kellett said the upcoming season will help new audiences watching Pop TV catch up on the story and characters. She also remarked, “It’s obvious that 2020 is an election year, and this is a LatinX family in America…we have tried on the show to have hard conversations that families have to have, especially LatinX families. We are still going to continue to have those conversations.”
One Day at a Time does not have a precise return date yet, however season four is expected to air in 2020.
