Ryan Coogler’s ‘The X-Files’ Reboot Pilot Completes Filming As Hulu Decision Awaits

Ryan Coogler’s (Black Panther, Creed, Sinners) upcoming reboot of The X-Files has reached a major production milestone. According to ScreenRant, Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Don’t Look Up, Tenet) recently confirmed that filming has officially wrapped on the pilot episode as the project awaits a decision from Hulu regarding a potential series order.

The upcoming reboot stars Patel alongside Danielle Deadwyler (The Harder They Fall, Carry-On, Rooster) in the lead roles. While details surrounding the series remain limited, Patel confirmed that he and Deadwyler will portray completely new characters within the X-Files universe.

Coogler is developing the new take on the long-running science fiction franchise and wrote and directed the pilot episode. The project began filming in May after receiving a pilot order from Hulu. Jennifer Yale (See, The Producers, Your Friends & Neighbors) will serve as showrunner, while original series creator Chris Carter (Millennium, The After, The Lone Gunmen) will serve as an executive producer.

Patel previously starred in several television series, including Avenue 5, Station Eleven, Black Mirror, and The Franchise. His performance as Jeevan Chaudhary in Station Eleven, which also featured Deadwyler, earned him an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. He will next appear in Christopher Nolan’s (Interstellar, Oppenheimer, Dunkirk) The Odyssey

The original series starred David Duchovny (Californication, What Happens Later, You People) as Fox Mulder and Gillian Anderson (The Fall, Bleak House, The Last King of Scotland) as Dana Scully. The series followed the two FBI agents as they investigated paranormal events, government conspiracies, and potential extraterrestrial activity while approaching their cases from opposing perspectives.

The X-Files premiered in 1993 and initially ran for nine seasons before returning for two additional seasons in 2016 and 2018. The franchise also expanded to the films The X-Files and The X-Files: I Want to Believe, starring Duchovny and Anderson alongside series regular Mitch Pileggi (Basic Instinct, Shocker, Walker) as Walter Skinner.

Hulu has not yet announced whether The X-Files reboot will receive a full series order or when the project could premiere.
