A day after hinting that Marvel may be reviving Netflix’s version of The Punisher, DMZ actress Rosario Dawson is now clarifying that she was fed false information. According to coverage by Murphy’s Multiverse, Dawson relayed that The Punisher starring Jon Bernthal (We Own This City, The Bear) would be revived in the current Marvel Cinematic Universe, much like Charlie Cox’s (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Stardust) Daredevil has in recent months. Her comments were captured on video at the C2E 2022 event and posted on Twitter via Knight Media’s EIC, Caleb Williams.
As any news regarding Marvel’s projects spreads like wildfire, the internet rejoiced at this exclusive tidbit. Unfortunately, a day later Dawson has come forward tweeting a retraction to her statement, via IGN. She apparently received incorrect information from fans during a table signing at the event.
Many would have assumed Dawson’s information was accurate given she appeared in four of the Netflix Marvel universe shows as Claire Temple. Originating in the first season of Daredevil, Temple was a nightshift nurse who inadvertently became Matt Murdock’s secret medical aide. She would later become the love interest of Mike Colter’s (Evil, The Following) Luke Cage and a fixture in the grounded universe. The only show she did not reprise the role for was Punisher.
Bernthal starred as The Punisher aka Frank Castle in two seasons of the 2017 series. A military vet for a dark ops unit, Castle dons his antihero alter ego after the violent murders of his wife and son. As he seeks vengeance on those who spilled his family’s blood, he uncovers their deaths are linked to a larger conspiracy. He debuted in the second season of Daredevil as a violent adversary for Murdock.
Dawson was recently seen in the Emmy-nominated limited series, Dopesick, and will be returning to the Star Wars universe for her solo series, Ashoka for Disney+.
Both seasons of The Punisher are available to stream on Disney+.
