David O. Russel, the writer and director behind Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, is working on a new drama series which will star Academy Award winners Julianne Moore and Robert De Niro.
According to Deadline, not much is known about the series as of yet as the project is still in the early stages of development, but it is rumored to be crime/cop drama thriller potentially set in the 1990s. The show is expected to run for multiple seasons, straying away from the popular trend of limited crime series such as HBO’s True Detective and The Night Of, yet retaining the element of an A-list level cast like True Detective was able to gather with actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, and the upcoming Netflix series Maniac which boasts a cast featuring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill.
The project is targeting streaming sites and cable networks, but is reportedly already receiving offers from big networks for multiple seasons prior to even releasing any pitches, indicating that networks are both hungry for fresh and potentially lucrative content, and that the incredibly stacked list of big names behind the series speaks volumes about the project already. Megan Ellison (Her), Alexandra Milchan (The Wolf of Wall Street), and Scott Lambert (Broken City) are also attached to the project as producers.
Russell has already shown his chemistry with De Niro in Silver Linings Playbook in 2012 and Joy in 2015, and showcased his directing and screenwriting chops with back to back Oscar nominations for Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle.
For De Niro, this marks his first time starring in a television series, having only made a few appearances on shows like 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live. De Niro is also set to star in the upcoming HBO drama film The Wizard of Lies based on the book of the same name by Diana B. Henriques. Julianne Moore has a much more extensive list of television credits, having starred in the CBS soap opera As the World Turns from 1985-1988, as well as appearing and starring in multiple television films since 1989, most recently in the 2012 HBO film Game Change in which she portrayed former Governor of Alaska Sarah Palin. Moore and De Niro have also worked together prior to this new project in the 2012 film Being Flynn in which they play a divorced couple whose estranged son, played by Paul Dano, struggles with the choice to reconnect with his alcoholic father.
