Ridley Scott to Develop ‘Blade Runner’ Series at Amazon

The Blade Runner franchise will be coming to Amazon Prime. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott (AlienThe Last Duel) will be developing a television adaptation of the franchise for the streamer.

The series will be titled Blade Runner 2099 and will serve as a sequel to the original 1989 film and the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

The original film featured Harrison Ford (Indiana JonesStar Wars) as the lead. He was preceded by Ryan Gosling (La La LandThe Notebook) in the 2017 sequel. The original film initially underperformed, but it is considered one of the best science fiction films of all time. The sequel also underperformed in the box office, but it was critically acclaimed and won two Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Set in a dystopian Los Angeles, Blade Runner follows police officer Rick Deckard (Ford) who is tasked with hunting down human-like androids, called replicants.

The Blade Runner series may be hard to launch for television as Netflix attempted to try the cyberpunk genre with Altered Carbon, which only lasted for two seasons. Adult Swim also tried to revitalize the series with an anime, titled Blade Runner: Black Lotus, which focuses on a female replicant.

A release date was not confirmed for Blade Runner 2099.
