According to Comicbook.com, in move that promises to thrill fans of the wildly popular animated series, Adult Swim is gearing up to release Rick and Morty: The Anime later this summer. This full-fledged spinoff, born from a series of experimental anime shorts, marks a significant expansion of the Rick and Morty universe. It also opens the door for more potential anime adaptations of other beloved Adult Swim originals.
Jason DeMarco (Blade Runner: Black Lotus, IGPX: Immortal Grand Prix, Toonami: The Intruder), the producer of Rick and Morty: The Anime and senior vice president at Adult Swim, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios shared insights about this exciting development during an interview with ComicBook.com at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. DeMarco hinted at the possibility of additional anime spinoffs, contingent on the success of the Rick and Morty anime adaptation.
“I mean, we have some ideas but there’s nothing currently…very far along,” DeMarco remarked. “But I think if this does well, it’s definitely a possibility and there are definitely ways we are trying to look at our characters and see if there are interesting interpretations, whether it be anime or other types of interpretations.”
Also mentioned by Comicbook.com was that DeMarco emphasized that Adult Swim is always seeking new and innovative ways to reinterpret its characters. The success of Rick and Morty: The Anime could pave the way for similar projects, allowing a new generation of artists to bring fresh perspectives to established properties. “Great characters have a life of their own, and they will always over the years get reinterpreted and reimagined by a new generation,” he noted.
According to Comicbook.com, the process of developing these new interpretations is something Adult Swim wants to happen organically. DeMarco highlighted the importance of finding creators who can bring unique and exciting takes to the material. “We want that to happen organically and in a way like Rick and Morty: The Anime where we find someone who has a different take, but that we find exciting who can interpret the same material, but in a new way that feels like its own thing that deserves to stand on its own,” he explained.
As for Rick and Morty: The Anime, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see the results of this creative endeavor. As mentioned by Comicbook.com, the series is set to premiere on Adult Swim with its English dub on August 15 at midnight, followed by the English subtitled release on August 17.This eagerly anticipated spinoff is expected to deliver the same irreverent humor and boundary-pushing content that the original Rick and Morty is known for but with a distinct anime flair.
With the imminent debut of Rick and Morty: The Anime, fans are not only getting a fresh take on their favorite series, but they will also get a glimpse into the potential future of Adult Swim’s programming. The series’ reception will likely influence whether other shows will follow in its anime footsteps, marking an exciting new chapter in the evolution of animated television.
