Episode five of Devil May Cry begins as Dante and the rest of the passengers free fall from the wrecked plane from the previous episode. Dante straps parachutes to the passengers as far as he can, but begins to physically change.
Dante experiences dark flashbacks of when he lost his mother and brother as he continues to fall. This rage and high stake mission led him to tap into his ‘devil trigger’. Dante changes into a form similar to Sparda, sprouting wings and saving the other passengers from falling to their deaths.
Dante continues to fight the ice demon, demanding his necklace. His new body increases his power, allowing him to take down demons with ease. The ice demon explains that this necklace is with the White Rabbit, but that’s all he knows.
Mary continues to be trapped in the White Rabbit’s lair, which is riddled with demons. Darkcom scopes out the building but cannot force their way through. Mary is alone in this high stake mission, all while being drugged by the demons.
In her search for an exit, she stumbles upon a medical laboratory that is keeping dying demons alive so that they can be experimented on. She spared mercy on the demon that cried out, attracting the attention of her fellow soldier, who was a disguised demon.
Mary had flashbacks of encountering demons as a child, leading her to shoot the facility out of frustration. She explains to her comrade that there are demons that do not seek violence, but he interrupts her, referring to the demon realm in his native tongue. Mary instantly recognizes that he is a demon, leading to a gunfight.
The shapeshifting demon returns to its natural form. As it’s about to execute her, she begins to negotiate. She explains to the demon that with her body, he can infiltrate Darkcom. With this new body, he attracts another one of the White Rabbit’s other henchmen and is quickly killed. Mary uses this opportunity to have the upper hand and attack the other demon to its surprise.
After this fight, Mary accesses the control room and opens up the gates to the building. Darkcom immediately begins to enter, but she commands them to fall back. Before they could take this warning, bombs ignited at the entrance.
Mary uses this control room to speak to the refugee demons, explaining that their mission is a rescue mission. She informs them that she will escort them out as they fight the White Rabbit. Mary orders the Darkcom team to escort the refugees to HW while she takes down the White Rabbit.
In this moment, Dante Crashes into the headquarters where Mary is trapped. The two both look confused, as the White Rabbit is not present, but appears on a screen within the room. Mary boasts that they’ve wrecked his plan and are escorting the refugees as they speak. Even so, the White rabbit has not yet opened the portal to the other dimension, alarming Mary.
They find that Dante is the key, and his activated demon blood is just what the rabbit needed. The White Rabbit demands that Dante come forward, or else he will order an attack. Meanwhile, the vice president betrays Mary and murders all of the refugees. Because of this, the rabbit’s henchman, the shapeshifter demon, detonates a bomb, obliterating the entire scene.
Episode five of this series reveals a brutal turning point that delivers high action and emotional devastation. Now that Dante’s devil trigger is finally activated and Mary is caught between a moral crossfire, this episode dives deeper into demon-hunting’s exterior purpose, going into deeper questions of identity and trust. The episode’s betrayal at the conclusion shows the franchise’s gothic, dark themes that many fans expect of the series. As human morality begins to blur with the entry of some demons being innocent, audiences can expect an unpredictable, high stakes climax.
