Veep alum Reid Scott (Venom, My Boys) and Broadway star Gideon Glick (It Could Be Worse, Ocean’s Eight) have been added as recurring characters to Amazon’s critically acclaimed comedy The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. According to Deadline, who exclusively reported on the casting announcement Thursday, both Scott and Glick “will appear in multi-episode arcs,” though no further details about their characters have been released.
The Amy Sherman-Palladino (Gilmore Girls, Bunheads) period comedy, starring Rachel Brosnahan (House of Cards, Manhattan) as 50s housewife turned stand-up comedian Midge Maisel, was a breakthrough for Amazon’s original streaming content in 2017. According to Deadline, the series has earned the streaming service twenty Emmy wins in addition to “six Critics Choice Awards including Best Comedy Series, two PGA Awards, a WGA Award, and a Peabody Award.”
While the world of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is mostly composed of original characters such as Brosnahan’s Midge and Alex Borstein’s (Family Guy, MADtv) Susie, there is a precedent for the series to include historical figures instrumental in the burgeoning comedy scene. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel includes Luke Kirby (The Deuce, Take This Waltz) as trailblazing comedy figure Lenny Bruce, meaning the possibility that Scott and/or Glick could play a character familiar to stand-up fans cannot be ruled out entirely.
Scott is no stranger to critically-acclaimed comedy as he played Dan Egan for seven seasons on Veep, the HBO comedy with a reputation for racking up Emmy nominations and awards during its run. In fact, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won its first Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2018, a year in which Veep did not qualify, thus leaving a vacuum in the category after the political comedies’ three-year win streak. Its unknown whether Scott’s role on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel could turn into a long-term gig, therefore attaching him to a series destined for a similar award trajectory to his alma-mater Veep.
While Glick likewise has television credits, his background primarily stems from the theater where he’s starred in productions such as Spring Awakening, Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark, To Kill a Mockingbird and the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors. Broadway sources such as Playbill and Broadway.com took to Twitter to congratulate the stage actor in his upcoming role in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Aside from Scott and Glick’s casting, not much is known at this point about the upcoming fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. While Snopes confirmed a recent TikTok report that the series’ had started production in New York City, a premiere date for the latest season remains as much of a mystery as Scott and Glick’s new characters.
