Reboot of ‘Beavis and Butt-Head’ Coming to Comedy Central

Two weeks after greenlighting Daria spin-off Jodie, ViacomCBS-owned Comedy Central is expanding its animation programming by drawing from MTV once again. MTV Animation mega hit Beavis and Butt-Head will be revived at Comedy Central for two seasons and all-new spinoffs, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Beavis and Butt-Head followed the two eponymous juvenile delinquents as they either caused chaos or slacked off all day in their hometown of Highland, Texas. The show became a perfect snapshot of youth culture in the 1990s due to its often controversial content, the teenagers’ sardonic and disaffected attitudes, and the segments of the show that lampooned various popular music videos of the time. The series debuted in March 1993, running for seven seasons until November 1997. The show was revived for one final season which aired from October to December 2011.

While the eighth season picked up immediately where the original run ended, the Comedy Central reboot will be a radical reimagining. As Rolling Stone reported, Beavis and Butt-Head will now be parents raising children, highlighting the gap between Gen X and Gen Z. Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS’ Entertainment and Youth Division, told the Hollywood Reporter that “Beavis and Butt-Head were a defining voice of a generation, and we can’t wait to watch as they navigate the treacherous waters of a world light-years from their own.”

Mike Judge (King of the Hill), creator of the original series, will return as Executive Producer and Head Writer for the reboot. In addition, he will reprise his role as the two leads. Judge remarked to  the Hollywood Reporter that “It seemed like the time was right to get stupid again.”

Comedy Central has ordered two seasons for the reboot, making this a straight-to-series order. While the network has also ordered spin-offs, details concerning these are currently unavailable. An air date for the reboot is currently unknown.
