Rain Spencer To Lead New YA Drama, ‘Genuine Fraud’ At Amazon

Deadline has reported that, Prime Video has set its sights on another YA hit, employing the talents of one from The Summer I Turned Pretty. Rain Spencer (Good Girl Jane, Test Screening) will be attached to the series, Genuine Fraud, based on a novel by the author of We Were Liars, E. Lockhart (Again Again, We Were Liars) . Spencer will also executive produce the series with one of the writers from TSTIP, Sinead Daly (Tell Me Lies, Dirty John), as the creator.

According to Deadline, Genuine Fraud will follow a social climber who attempts to steal the life of a wealthy heiress after she goes missing.

Via Deadline, in addition to Spencer, Lockhart, and Daly, Patrick Moran (Harrow, Citadel) and Lynley Byrd (Panic, Endless Love) from PKM Productions. Moran and Bird were the first to bring the novel to Amazon’s attention via a first-look deal the studio has with PKM.

Deadline has reported that Spencer is the first TSITP star to get to take center stage in their own series. TSITP’s third and final season just finished airing on Prime Video. Spencer was initially a recurring character in season one before being promoted to series regular in season two. Her best friend’s older brother troupe romance was a welcome respite for fans from the turmoil of the main love triangle.

According to Deadline, it is widely assumed that Spencer will return for the upcoming TSITP movie. Up next, Spencer will be in the debut feature of Paloma Schinder, Big Girls Don’t Cry, a product of the Jane Campion directing lab. She also recently finished shooting the follow-up to the Tribeca-winning Good Girl Jane.

Via Deadline, in addition to TSITP, Daly is known for her work as the showrunner of the animated series Midnight Sun, the latest installment in the Twilight saga, and as a staff writer on Tell Me Lies. On the feature side, she wrote the film Anya’s Ghost.

Deadline has reported that the Lockhart’s novel We Were Liars was a viral sensation on TikTok, eventually finding its way to Amazon for the adaptation. Lockhart serves as executive producer on the series. The series has been renewed for a second season. The literary installment in the series We Fell Apart is set to be released by Random House in November.
