Following the footsteps of its Saved by the Bell revival, Peacock is readying another reboot of classic NBC sitcom. According to Comicbook.com, the streaming platform has announced the premiere date for its Punky Brewster revival. All 10 episodes will debut on the NBCUniversal streaming service on February 25.
According to Comicbook.com, the original series starred Soleil Moon Frye (Staging Christmas, The Killing Secret) as the adorable, pig-tailed foster kid, Punky. The series followed the typical sitcom hijinks and also starred Cherie Johnson (Family Matters, I Do…I Did) as her best friend, Cherie, and George Gaynes (Police Academy, Tootsie) as her foster father, Henry. The show aired for four seasons before coming to an unexpected end in 1988. It never received an official series finale because of the writer’s strike at the time.
Three decades later, the reboot finds adult Punky as a single mom with three children of her own, according to Comicbook.com. Frye and Johnson will reprise their roles, and the series will add Freddie Prinze Jr. (I Know What You Did Last Summer, She’s All That) as Punky’s ex-husband, Travis. The former couple’s three children will be played by Noah Cottrell (Skyscraper), Oliver De Los Santos (Rainfall, Home Plate), and Lauren Lindsey Donzis (No Good Nick, Liv and Maddie).
According to Variety, the story will find Punky juggling life as a single parent when she meets a young girl named Izzy, played by newcomer, Quinn Copeland. Izzy will be a child of the foster care system and remind Punky of her younger self.
According to Comicbook.com, Frye serves as an executive producer along with series writers Steve and Jim Armogida (Courting Alex, Grounded For Life), original series creator David Duclon (Eve, Family Matters), and Jimmy Fox (Hollywood Darlings, Breaking Greenville) through Main Event Media. The show is handled through UCP and Universal Television.
