Prime Video’s newest rendition of Mr. & Mrs. Smith saw great success during its launch earlier this year, with the series becoming one of Prime Video’s top five television premieres in the U.S., according to mxdwn. With season two in the works, production is seeking two new leads for the series as its previous leads, Donald Glover (Atlanta, Community) and Maya Erskine (Pen15, Wine Country), had an ambiguous conclusion at the end of season one, reports Deadline.
In order to provide the series some context, the show adapts the spy-couple concept of the 2005 Mr. & Mrs. Smith film and gives a modernized take on having a double life. The official logline explains the following: “Two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travels, and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith. Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What’s riskier: espionage or marriage?” via mxdwn.
After the season one Mr. & Mrs. Smith finale, Vernon Sanders (The Enemy Within, Harry’s Law), head of TV at Amazon MGM Studios, commented on the speculations of Glover and Erskine’s return. According to mxdwn, Sanders said, “The only thing we can share is that Donald and Maya laid out their vision for season two, and we’re incredibly excited about it. It’s wildly imaginative. It’s really unpredictable.”
While Sanders and show creators Francesca Sloane (Atlanta, Fargo) and Glover have avoided giving away what exactly happened at the season one finale, Deadline reports that A-list celebrity names are circulating to join season two. What seems like a one-year contract deal for a lead type in season two, Deadline says that one celebrity rumored to be in the circulation pool is singer Billie Eilish (Swarm, Billie Eilish: Birds of a Feather).
