According to The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon MGM Studios has officially canceled Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, folding both international spinoffs into Season two of the main Citadel series. The announcement came Wednesday from Amazon MGM Studios’ head of television, Vernon Sanders.
“Storylines from both Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana will be woven into the upcoming second season of the mothership series Citadel,” Sanders said in a statement.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the decision follows internal dissatisfaction with the direction of Season two. Sources told THR that Amazon executives “were unhappy with what they saw for season two of the OG Citadel.”
Citadel, created by Joe Russo (Community, Arrested Development) and Anthony Russo’s (Community, Arrested development ) AGBO, was originally envisioned by former Amazon executive Jennifer Salke (This Is Us, Modern Family)as a global spy franchise. But with Salke out and Amazon now in control of the actual James Bond IP, priorities have shifted.
“Amazon no longer has Jen Salke,” The Hollywood Reporter noted. “And it now controls the real James Bond.”
Citadel: Honey Bunny, set in India and starring Varun Dhawan (Bhediya, October) and Samantha Ruth Prabhu (Family Man, Yashoda), had debuted to solid regional praise. It explored the legacy of main-series character Nadia Sinh’s family roots.
Meanwhile, Citadel: Diana—an Italian installment starring Matilda De Angelis (The Undoing, Atlas)—offered a fresh spy-thriller perspective with strong local flair. Both spinoffs were developed to be enjoyed as standalone series.
Despite positive reception, they were halted as part of Amazon’s pivot. “These successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series,” said Sanders.
Citadel has faced turbulence since its inception. Reshoots, creative clashes, and crew turnover reportedly added $75 million to the already bloated $160 million budget, making it one of the costliest shows ever produced.
“Two competing cuts and crew defections” marred the first season, The Hollywood Reporter wrote, placing Citadel behind only The Rings of Power in terms of production costs.
Despite the setbacks, the show was renewed for a second season ahead of its April 2023 premiere. “Season two of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet,” Sanders said.
Season two picks up one month after the Season one finale. The spies of Citadel—Nadia, Mason, and Orlick—are hunted across the globe by Manticore agents and must unite with a new team to stop a global threat.
According to THR, the logline reveals “Manticore’s Brazilian billionaire Paulo Braga threatens to unleash a cataclysmic piece of technology, built by Citadel’s own Bernard Orlick, into the world.”
“With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason, and Orlick,” said Sanders.
While fans of the international Citadel spinoffs may be disappointed, Amazon’s decision reflects a strategic consolidation. By streamlining the franchise into a single, global narrative, the studio is betting on quality over quantity.
As Vernon Sanders put it, “We’re excited to share what’s next when Citadel Season two premieres globally in Q2 of 2026.”
