Prime Video unveiled a first look at their upcoming spy-thriller drama series Butterfly Monday morning on the company’s official Youtube channel. The trailer offers viewers a glimpse of the series, a six-episode adaptation of Arash Amel’s (A Private War, Rise) comic book series that was first announced in 2023.
The trailer also introduces audiences to the father-daughter spy team that comprises the core of Butterfly’s dynamic. Daniel Dae-Kim (Lost, Avatar: The Last Airbender) will star in the series as former US intelligence agent David Jung, who finds himself forced back into old ways when he reunites with his estranged daughter Rebecca (Reina Hardesty), who has become an operative for clandestine spy organization Caddis in his absence. With nowhere else to turn, the duo of agents form an unlikely alliance as they struggle to survive against ghosts of both Daniel and Rebecca’s pasts.
Audiences might recognize Kim, who is also serving as an executive producer for the series, for his recent roles as the villainous Fire Lord Ozai on Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender remake or Hawaii Five-0 mainstay Chin Ho Kelly. Hardesty (StartUp, The Flash), meanwhile, recently starred as Brooke in 2024’s horror-comedy It’s What’s Inside. Ken Woodruff (Gotham, The Mentalist) will act as series showrunner alongside novelist Steph Cha (Your House Will Pay, Dead Soon Enough).
A new aspect of Prime Video’s adaptation of Butterfly is setting, which trades the comic’s more traditional globe-trotting exploits for the bustling backdrop of the streets of South Korea. “Butterfly is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply,” remarked Kim in a previous press release for the series. “I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, BOOM! Studios, 3AD, Amazon, and everyone else who helped bring it to life.”
Butterfly will premiere on August 13th on Prime Video in more than 240 countries worldwide. The series’ newest trailer is available in full below.
