Prime Video is reportedly in talks to become the new home of the Primetime Emmy Awards. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Television Academy and the Amazon-owned streaming service are discussing a potential deal that would move the annual awards ceremony away from broadcast television.
If an agreement is reached, it would mark the first time in Emmy history that the ceremony would not air on a broadcast network. The Television Academy’s most recent eight-year agreement with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC ended following NBC’s broadcast of the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.
The four major broadcast networks have rotated coverage of the Emmys since the mid-1990s. Under the previous arrangement, the ceremony moved between the networks each year, making a potential deal with Prime Video a significant change in how the awards are distributed to viewers.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards were hosted by Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Lake Placid, Leaving Las Vegas). The ceremony marked the final Emmys broadcast under the Television Academy’s latest agreement with ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC.
Prime Video already has experience carrying major live events. The streaming service has held the rights to the Academy of Country Music Awards since 2021. It has also expanded its live sports programming through rights agreements involving the NFL, NBA, WNBA and NASCAR.
A potential move to Prime Video would also come as other major awards ceremonies change their distribution strategies. The Academy Awards are set to leave ABC and move to YouTube beginning in 2029 as part of a five-year agreement with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
The Grammy Awards, meanwhile, will move from CBS to ABC beginning in 2027, with the ceremony also set to stream on Hulu and Disney+. CBS’ 10-year agreement with the Tony Awards also ended this year, while the network is currently two years into a five-year agreement to broadcast the Golden Globe Awards.
Should the Television Academy reach an agreement with Prime Video, the Emmys would become another major awards ceremony to move away from its longtime traditional television arrangement. However, negotiations remain ongoing, and a deal between the Television Academy and Prime Video has not yet been finalized.
