According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apple TV+ debuted the second season of the buddy comedy Platonic, starring the former Neighbors couple Rose Byrne (Spy, Bridesmaids) and Seth Rogen (Superbad, The Studio). The series follows the duo as they navigate the hurdles of middle age and friendship.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, the series was originally intended to be an anthology, with a rotating duo of stars every season. However, due to the first season’s streaming success, both Byrne and Rogan elected to return. The second season premiered in Los Angeles, and the Hollywood Reporter spoke to Rogan. “As we were shooting the first season, I was kind of pushing for [creators Nicholas Stoller (The Muppets, Storks) and Francesca Delbanco (Friends From College, Platonic)] to brainstorm how it could continue and how to not replace us with other people, and thank god they listened.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne and Rogan portrayed a non-platonic relationship in the 2014 comedy Neighbors and its 2016 sequel, in which they were depicted as married. When asked about whether she would like to see their Neighbors co-star Zac Efron (17 Again, Hairspray) join the series, Byrne replied, “I don’t understand why that hasn’t come to fruition yet. Now I have it in my head that’s what we need to do.”
The Hollywood Reporter reports that Rogan echoed his support for a possible reunion, “We need to get Ike and Zac in Platonic. That’d be great,” Deblaso speculated on the possibility. “It would be amazing stunt casting if we get [another] season and if he would do it. It would be so funny.” Ike Barinholtz (Suicide Squad, The Mindy Project) played the role of Jimmy Blevins in Neighbors.
Via The Hollywood Reporter, Byrne spoke about why her and Rogan’s working relationship meshed so well as both actors and executive producers. “Seth is funny on a molecular level, so you just sort of of go in the magnetism of that and we seem to have a really easy time together.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rogan replied to his co-star and mused about how acting chemistry plays out in mysterious ways. “In film chemistry is a mysterious thing; you never know who you’re going to have good chemistry with,” Rogen replied, “There’s people who are great friends in real life that have terrible chemistry on screen. I’ve had great chemistry with people I don’t particularly like that much, and so I’m very lucky in this situation where I have chemistry with someone who I actually like. So I think that’s why we keep working together over and over again.” Fans can watch the second season of Platonic on August 6th on Apple TV+.
