According to Variety, Disney has begun development of a pilot for Spaceship Earth. The show is based on the ride of the same name at EPCOT.
Jason Fuchs (IT: Welcome to Derry, It Chapter 2) is planned to be the showrunner and executive producer through Five Ten Productions, with Michael Waldron (Loki, Rick and Morty) as another executive producer through his studio Anomaly Pictures. Lee Toland Krieger (You, Riverdale) will be the executive producer of the pilot episode of the series. Casting for the pilot is currently in progress.
The logline for the pilot describes it as follows:
“When a mission to avert an imminent global cataclysm goes awry, a small band of teenagers from Earth’s past and future must join forces to confront a threat as vast and mysterious as time itself.”
Spaceship Earth has been a staple ride in EPCOT since its opening in 1982, being located in the geometric sphere the park is known for. The ride has gone through many changes over the years as technologies have advanced. Throughout these changes, the ride, taking place through time, shows the history of communication and various breakthroughs such as telephones and the radio.
If the pilot were to turn into a series, it would not be the first Disney park ride to be translated to the screen. Famously, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has grossed over $4.5 billion worldwide, with other films such as Jungle Cruise and Haunted Mansion being made based on famous Disney park rides.
The order for a Spaceship Earth pilot comes after Disney+ announced various other pilots coming out for projects. Disney+ recently announced a pilot for a reboot of The Mickey Mouse Club, and other pilots for shows based on The Last Kids on Earth and Aquamarine.
The pilot has no release date yet, nor has a director been announced.
