According to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Peri Gilpin (Broad City, Kevin Can F**k Himself) will be joining the Paramount+ sequel to the popular hit ’90s series Frasier. Gilpin appeared on the 1993-2004 comedy as Roz Doyle for almost all 264 episodes. Doyle was the radio producer for titular character Frasier Crane, played by five-time Emmy winner Kelsey Grammer (Cheers, The Expendables 3).
Frasier was a staple in its time, having been nominated for over 250 different awards and winning a total of 37 Emmys. It was centered on Grammer’s Dr. Frasier Crane, a radio psychiatrist who lived with his father.
At the end of the NBC series in 2004, Gilpin’s character received a promotion to station manager while Frasier made the decision to leave Seattle.
Very little is known about the Frasier reboot. The comedy is still in production and is reportedly about Frasier’s life after Seattle. The revival will take place in Boston and will focus on Grammer’s Frasier as he navigates new challenges and relationships, as well as trying to accomplish some new (and old) dreams.
Gilpin is not the first original cast member to reprise their role on the revival. Bebe Neuwirth (Cheers, Madame Secretary) will also make an appearance on the upcoming series, portraying Lilith Sternin.
The main cast includes Jack Cutmore-Scott (Tenet, Dunkirk) as Freddy, Frasier and Lilith’s son, and Nicholas Lyndhurst (Goodnight Sweetheart, After You’ve Gone) as Alan. Additionally, Toks Olagundoye (The Neighbors, Arcane) will star as Olivia, Jess Salguerio (Jupiter’s Legacy, Letterkenny) as Eve, and Anders Keith (Variations) as David, among others.
One original cast member has confirmed that he will not appear in the sequel. David Hyde Pierce (Julia, The Perfect Host), who played Frasier’s brother, Niles, has opted out of the show. The same can be said for Jane Leeves (James and the Giant Peach, The Resident), or Daphne Moon, who has yet to make a statement on her involvement.
John Mahoney (Moonstruck, Flipped), best known for his role as Frasier and Niles’ father, will not return for the revival due to his passing in 2018.
All eleven seasons of Frasier are currently available on Hulu. A release date for the Frasier reboot has not been announced, but is expected to be later this year.
