The cast for the highly anticipated second season of Percy Jackson and The Olympians has just received a major update. It was revealed that Andra Day (Cars 3) will be playing Athena, the mother of Annabeth, played by Leah Jeffries (Beast). According to Variety, Day posted on her official Instagram page about her excitement about joining the cast as the proclaimed goddess of wisdom and wished viewers not to miss it. The series focuses on Percy, played by Walker Scobell (Adam Project), along with Annabeth and Grover, played by Aryan Simhadri (Spin), traveling across America on a dangerous journey to stop the war between the gods.
According to Variety, Day is a well-known singer famous for her performance in the 2021 Lee Daniel (Concrete Cowboy) biopic, The United States vs. Billie Holiday, in which she played the titled character and earned a Golden Globe and a Grammy award. Athena is one of the most important gods in Rick Riordan’s (The Lost Hero) Percy Jackson series, and fans are surely excited to see how Day will portray the character.
According to Variety, the official tagline of the second season states, “Percy’s world is turned upside down from one year in returning to Camp Halfblood. He finds out he has a cyclops for a half brother, his friendship with Annabeth starts to fluctuate, Groover goes missing and the camp is attacked by forces from Kronos. He is then plunged into a journey that leads him to the deadly Sea of Monsters and will unravel untold mysteries.”
According to an mxdwn post, the second season will be based on the Sea of Monsters book, and not only will fans see Athena, but they will also get to witness Tamara Smart (Are You Afraid of the Dark?) as Thalia, daughter of Zeus. It will surely be filled with new monsters mentioned in the second book, such as Hydra, Sirens and many others. While fans await further information on the second season, the entire first of Percy Jackson and The Olympians is available to stream on Disney+.
