It looks like Americans won’t have to wait much longer for the highly addictive Peaky Blinders to premiere on Netflix. Deadline confirms that the British crime drama is set to premiere in the United Kingdom on May 5th and will premiere a few weeks later in the US, on May 31st.
BBC’s 1920s crime drama features Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Sophie Rundle, and Joe Cole. Murphy (The Dark Knight Rises, 28 Days Later) plays Tommy Shelby, the leader of the violent Peaky Blinders gang, post World War I. Hardy (Mad Max, The Revenant) is returning as crime boss Alfie Solomons who has an on-again-off-again relationship with Tommy.
The series follows Tommy Shelby’s attempt to rise to power in Birmingham’s 1920s after his return from fighting in World War I. Shelby is joined by other family members including his brothers, aunt, and cousin. Peaky Blinders is based off of an actual gang, by the same name, that were known for sewing razorblades into their caps.
Like the first season, the third season will only have six episodes to air before fans are left wanting and waiting for more.
In an interview with Deadline earlier last year, creator Steven Knight hinted that season 3 was an “exponential step up” from the previous 2 seasons.
When asked about Americas’ fascination with the show in the same interview, Knight had this to say:
“The response in America has been amazing. Partly it’s because it’s a family that has huge problems so we can all identify. I also think with our flawed hero—and I know everyone does flawed heroes—he’s someone we aspire to be, and the other brothers maybe we recognize as ourselves. “
The new season will pick up where the last season left off; with Murphy’s character deciding between which girl he wants to be with… On his wedding day. Will it be Annabelle Wallis’s Grace or Charlotte Riley’s May? Torn between women, Shelby must figure out which one he needs more.
On top of the romantic drama, Knight promises that season 3 will be filled with more danger, including the gang being involved in an international arms deal, births and deaths. How will the Blinders survive such sticky situations?
I guess we’ll all have to tune in May 31st to find out.
