The Paper will maintain the iconic mockumentary style from The Office and will follow the escapades of a small town newspaper, The Truth Teller. The official logline reads “the crew is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Toledo newspaper, The Truth Teller, and the eager publisher that is trying to revive it,” according to The Verge.
NBC Universal Entertainment head Lisa Katz stated that The Paper will introduce “a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling,” via The Verge. Comedy vets Greg Daniels (The Office, Parks and Recreation) and Michael Koman (Nathan for You, Saturday Night Live) will reportedly take on writing and executive producing roles.
The cast currently includes Domhnall Gleeson (Ex-Machina, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2), Sabrina Impacciatore (The Passion of the Christ, The White Lotus), Chelsea Frei (The Moodys, Animal Control), Melvin Gregg (The Way Back, American Vandal), Gbemisola Ikumelo (Brain in Gear, The Last Tree), Alex Edelman (Unfrosted, Teenage Bounty Hunters) Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) Tim Key (See How They Run, Alan Partridge) and Oscar Nuñez (The Proposal, The Office), according to The Verge.
Though The Office ended over a decade ago, NBC finds there is still a market for this style of show, citing Abbott Elementary as a newer example. The Verge reports that the venture is Peacock’s big swing at carving out a distinct niche in the ever-growing streaming landscape.
