After a successful first season, James Gunn‘s (Superman, Guardians of the Galaxy) Peacemaker DCEU series on HBO continues its upward momentum with the second season. According to ScreenRant, not only did the second season of the HBO Max series debut at an exceptional 100%, but it also is currently Certified Fresh. With these ratings, the second season has even risen above and surpassed its first season, which already had a whopping 93% rating from critics.
Peacemaker is the first live-action series in Gunn’s new DC Universe, and the first season followed the eponymous hero, played by John Cena (The Suicide Squad, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem), after he suffers from an injury sustained during the events of The Suicide Squad (2021). The second season takes place after the events of Superman (2025).
According to ScreenRant, the first ratings coming out for the second season tease a deepening exploration of its characters, namely the growing complexity of the dynamic between Peacemaker himself and Emilia Harcourt, who is played by Jennifer Holland (The Suicide Squad, Black Adam).
ScreenRant writes that compared to a previously flat track record of ratings for DCEU’s movies, the first chapter of the new DCU is changing that, and Peacemaker continues to reflect this change. Only based on the DCEU alone, ScreenRant notes that the highest rated movie would be Wonder Woman (2017) at 93%, which makes Peacemaker‘s second season the highest rated out of all of DC’s live-action projects. The highest rated DC, not DCEU, movie would be The Dark Knight at 94%.
When considering Peacemaker among all DC series, ScreenRant writes that its Rotten Tomatoes score sits among a handful of shows, such as Batman Beyond, My Adventures with Superman, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. Only one other live-action DC series has matched Peacemaker’s record-breaking rating, which is Lynda Carter‘s (Super Troopers, Supergirl) 1976 series, Wonder Woman.
