Filming is well underway for the highly anticipated second season of Peacemaker, one of the first major projects in James Gunn’s (Superman, The Suicide Squad, Guardians Of The Galaxy) and Peter Safran’s (Superman, Annabelle: Creation, The Conjuring) new DC Universe. As mentioned by Comicbook.com, fans are eagerly awaiting the return of John Cena’s (Ricky Stanicky, jackpot!, Fred) Christopher Smith, also known as Peacemaker, along with other familiar faces. However, a new behind-the-scenes teaser from Gunn has sparked intrigue, as it hints at the appearance of a mysterious character that has yet to be revealed.
According to Comicbook.com, Gunn shared a cryptic image on Instagram from the Peacemaker set on Wednesday, featuring a male figure sitting in silhouette by a campfire. The photo was captioned, “Who might this be?” The vague nature of the post has left fans speculating about the identity of this shadowy figure and whether they are an established character from DC Comics.
Because of this image, several theories about who the mystery character could be emerged. According to Comicbook.com’s article, one of the leading guesses is that the figure may be one of DC’s Native American heroes, such as Apache Chief. Created for Hanna-Barbera’s Super Friends animated series, Apache Chief has the power to grow to enormous sizes. This trait has inspired later characters like Long Shadow in Justice League Unlimited and Manitou Raven in the JLAcomics.
Another possibility is Black Bison, a villain who previously appeared in The Flash television series. However, some fans are pointing to the character’s lighter hair in the teaser image, which could suggest an older man with graying hair or a younger man with blonde hair.
According to Comicbook.com, a more unconventional theory is that the mystery figure could be Travis Morgan, also known as Warlord. First introduced in 1975, Warlord is a former Air Force pilot who becomes a sword-and-sorcery hero after being trapped in the subterranean world of Skartaris. If true, this could mark the first live-action portrayal of the character, though the costume in the photo seems less extravagant than his comic-book counterpart. Warlord’s government ties also fuel speculation that the character could be involved with Checkmate, a covert organization rumored to play a role in Gunn’s new DCU.
While specific plot details for Peacemaker season two remain under wraps, several cast members have been confirmed to return. Cena will reprise his role as Peacemaker, with Freddie Stroma (UnReal, Pitch Perfect, A Cinderella Story, Peacemaker) as Vigilante, Jennifer Holland (Zombie Strippers, The Sisterhood, Brightburn) as Emilia Harcourt, Steve Agee (Rebirth, Dark Was The Night, Heartland) as John Economos and Danielle Brooks (The Purple Color, A Minecraft Movie, Orange Is The New Black) as Leota Adebayo.
As production progresses, fans are left to speculate about the show’s new twists and turns. Who is the mystery character, and what will their role be in the expanding DC Universe? Only time and more clues from Gunn will tell.
