DCEU fans received a first look at the upcoming new HBO Max original series from The Suicide Squad scribe, James Gunn. A teaser trailer for John Cena’s (Vacation Friends, Blockers) Peacemaker dropped during today’s DC FanDome event, via an HBO press release. Cena’s character first debuted on-screen in Gunn’s version of the Suicide Squad this summer. Check the trailer out below.
Premiering on January 13, 2022, the series will relay the origin story of Peacemaker, a hero who will stretch to any length in making sure peace reigns supreme. According to the press release, the expert weaponist is recruited by a task force led by Chukwudi Iwuji’s (Shine Your Eyes, The Girl Who Got Away) Murn to eliminate a roster of evildoers. His team is made up of an assortment of new characters for the DCEU. Jennifer Holland (American Pie Presents: The Book of Love, Zombie Strippers) has been cast as Harcourt, Peacemaker’s field handler. Next in line is Economos, the team’s tech and tactics specialist, played by Steve Agee (The Sarah Silverman Program, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2). Both Holland and Harcourt appeared in The Suicide Squad along with Cena. The blue-suited gun-totter is Vigilante, portrayed by Freddie Stroma (UNreal, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince). Stroma replaced Chris Conrad (Patriot, Karate Kid) in the role. And lastly, Danielle Brooks (Mahaila, Master of None) will play the team’s newest member, Adebayo. Like a ragamuffin Suicide Squad of his own, Peacemaker and company will experience growing pains as they blaze their own trail as superheroes. In addition to the main cast, Cena’s Peacemaker will also have to contend with a different adversary – his father, Auggie Smith, played by Robert Patrick (Scorpion, The Protege).
Coming from the mind of Gunn, who is known for his spectacular mix of crude humor and violence, Peacemaker looks very reminiscent of former hero fare such as Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn will serve as writer and director of the series, having written all eight episodes and directed five. He will executive produce through his Troll Court Entertainment along with Peter Safran’s (Annabelle: Creation, The Crooked Man) The Safran Company, and Warner Bros. Television. Matt Miller (Lethal Weapon) is also attached to executive produce along with Cena who has a co-executive producer credit.
