An Avenger and the Queen? How scandalous! Paul Bettany (WandaVision) and Claire Foy (The Crown) are preparing to star in the upcoming series A Very British Scandal, according to TVLine.
The series is set to follow the life, marriage, and much-talked-about divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll, who will be played by Bettany and Foy. Via TVLine, the official logline for the series explains:
“Famed for her charisma, beauty and style, Margaret (Foy), Duchess of Argyll, dominated the front pages as a divorcee featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery and an explicit Polaroid picture all played out in the white-hot glare of the 1960s media.”
Written by Sarah Phelps (writer, Dublin Murders), A Very British Scandal will be comprised of three hour-long episodes. According to TVLine, the series hopes to showcase how the Duchess was made out to be the villain in her divorce through unfair treatment in the press as well as a misogynistic justice system.
A Very British Scandal is produced by BBC One and Amazon Prime and is set to be a second anthology season to A Very English Scandal, via TVLine. The first season starred Hugh Grant (The Undoing) and Ben Whishaw (Skyfall) and followed the story behind the infamous and complicated affair that lost Jeremy Thorpe his political career.
Foy expressed her excitment for the upcoming series, stating “I’m so excited to work with [director] Anne [Sewitsky], Sarah and Paul on this extraordinary project, and to explore through this story how often shame, judgment and controversy surrounds a woman’s sexuality.” (TVLine)
Phelps, Foy, and Sewitsky (director, Sonja – The White Swan) are all attached to executive produce A Very British Scandal in addition to their primary roles on the series, via TVLine. While the series is currently still in production, it will air in the UK on BBC One and will become available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the United States. While it is unknown whether the episodes will be released weekly on Amazon Prime Video, A Very English Scandal released weekly on air and it is likely that its predecessor will follow suit. No release date for the series has been announced.
