Paramount has revealed the premiere date for the final season of Yellowjackets, as first reported by Deadline. The fourth season of the Emmy-nominated comedic thriller-drama, which follows the slow collapse of society within girls’ high school soccer team after their plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness, will stream on November 20 for premium members of Paramount+.
The announcement comes courtesy of the official Yellowjackets Instagram page, which posted a teaser trailer Thursday morning. A series of TVs flicker with reports from various newsfeeds that the Wiskayok Yellowjackets, the fictional soccer team that has been missing in-universe for the last nineteen months, has been found — some of them, anyways. The teaser ends with an ominous message promising that this is “the final reckoning.”
Viewers may remember that Yellowjackets uses a split timeline as its framing device, with half the story taking place immediately after the soccer team’s plane crash, and the other half taking place twenty-five years later, as the survivors reckon with the horrors they witnessed — and often partook in — in order to survive. If the teaser is anything to go by, season four will act as something of a bridge between these two timelines, depicting the girls’ struggle to reacclimate post-rescue.
The Instagram post’s attached caption offers some hints to the season’s contents. ” In the final season,” it reads, “as the survivors race to bury their sins before rescue arrives and an old flame roars back into town with plans of her own. Turns out not every homecoming is a joyous one, and this one’s going to sting.”
Yellowjackets has been one of Paramount’s most successful streaming ventures in recent memory, with the season three finale garnering more than three million viewers in its first week, per The Hollywood Reporter. The series has also received ten Emmy nominations.
Nevertheless, showrunning duo Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson (The Originals, Narcos) considered it important that the show not overstay its welcome. “We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end,” an Instagram post by the creators reads, “and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen. Telling this emotional, wild, and deeply human story has been a profoundly meaningful experience and a true honor for us, and we’re so very grateful to the brilliant cast, crew and writers who have bravely gone on the journey with us to bring it to life. Most of all, we want to thank the fans who have stuck with us through every moment, mystery and meal — the Hive is nothing without you! We can’t wait to share the final chapter with you and hope you find it…delicious.”
The season premiere of Yellowjackets will release on the premium version of Paramount+ on November 20.
