‘Ozark’ Creator Bill Dubuque With Straight To Series Order From Peacock For New Crime Drama ‘M.I.A.’

A new crime thriller is on the horizon with a fresh straight-to-series order, set in South Florida the female lead program will be called M.I.A. Attached to the project is Ozark co-creator Bill Dubuque (The Accountant, The Judge) and it will be distributed by Peacock. 

The series will focus on a southern Florida criminal kingpin, Etta Tiger Jonez, and her journey into power. According to Deadline, “In M.I.A., running drugs is a family affair for Etta Tiger Jonze. But when her family is slaughtered before her eyes, Etta sets out to exact justice on those responsible – avenging her blood family. At the same time, she builds her chosen family”.The series location will play a prominent role in the story, with the series named after Miami’s airport code.

In recent years, television shows set in southern Florida that specifically cover crime have been wildly popular. MGM+ released Hotel Cocaine, the original series of Dexter from Showtime is set in Miami, Netflix’s Griselda starring Sophia Vergara (Modern Family), as well as one of Netflix’s most successful shows, Narcos. 

As stated previously, Dubuque is best known for his work in co-creating Ozark with Mark Williams (Exile, Hypnotic), a crime drama distributed by Netflix. Starring Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Laura Linney (The Truman Show) and Julia Garner (Inventing Anna), Ozark follows a financial advisor thrust into a money laundering scheme for a drug cartel. Collectively, the series has been nominated for 45 Emmy awards and has a total of four wins, according to Deadline. The series is well-decorated with SAG and Golden Globe awards, among others.

The series will be produced by MCR for streaming on Peacock. The series showrunner and executive producer is Karen Campbell, best known for her work on Outlander and Dexter, with Stefano Sollima (ZeroZeroZero, Gomorrah) set to direct as well as executive produce.
