The producer who gave us the show Weeds has come back with another female-dominated show concentrating on crime and punishment, but this time it is the world inside the cell.
Orange Is The New Black follows the life of inmate Piper Chapman (played by Taylor Shilling) that has been imprisoned for a crime that she committed ten years ago. Netflix will be dropping the entire first season of the show exclusively next week.
In the beginning when the viewer is just becoming acquainted with Piper, she is enjoying the normal life with her fiance in Brooklyn, New York. Then the show gives a flash back to the nice blonde lady’s past that is not so nice. Before her fiance, she was a drug-smuggling lesbian for her girlfriend played by Laura Prepon. Those crimes eventually run her down, and she is sent to prison, where the show begins to take place.
“Once I read the script, I was really, really impressed that there was a woman who was the centerpiece of her own story and that it was less a role that was in reaction to a man,” Schilling said.
