Noah Wyle (ER, A Few Good Men, Donnie Darko) is speaking out about the recent cast changes in The Pitt. According to ScreenRant, the actor and executive producer addressed the online reaction surrounding several departures from the hit HBO Max series.
Season three of the medical drama is currently in production and will feature the return of Wyle alongside Sepideh Moafi (Black Bird, The Killing of Two Lovers, The Deuce), Katherine LaNasa (The Campaign, Valentine’s Day, Truth Be Told), Fiona Dourif (The Blacklist, When We Rise, Shameless), Patrick Ball (ReEntry, Law & Order), Taylor Dearden (Heartthrob, Breaking Bad, Sweet/Vicious), Isa Briones (Goosebumps, Star Trek: Picard, American Crime Story), Gerran Howell (Ludwig, 1917, Catch-22), Shabana Azeez (The Hunting, The Letdown, Blood Sisters), Shawn Hatosy (Animal Kingdom, Southland, Ready or Not 2: Here I Come) and Ayesha Harris (Glamorous, Abbott Elementary, Daisy Jones & The Six).
However, the departures of Supriya Ganesh (Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game, Billions, Grown-ish), who portrayed Dr. Samira Mohan, and Tracy Ifeachor (Treadstone, Wonka, The Originals), who played Dr. Heather Collins, have generated significant discussion among viewers. Both exits were reportedly the result of creative decisions.
Speaking on the Los Angeles Times podcast The Envelope, Wyle acknowledged the criticism while explaining that the creative team remains committed to telling the story they believe is best for the series.
“It’s nuanced, you know,” Wyle said. “Creatively, you try to put it in perspective to the overall viewing population, and it’s relatively small in relation to the overall, in terms of the more vocal critics.”
The actor went on to explain that audience reactions can be difficult to predict and that the writers regularly evaluate what is and is not working from season to season.
Wyle also confirmed that additional cast changes should be expected as the series continues.
“So every year, we come in and we sort of have to gut-check ourselves and do a post-mortem on the season: what worked well, what didn’t work well, and what is going to be part of this narrative as we go forward,” Wyle explained. “Cast changes are going to be part of that narrative going forward.”
The actor earned an Emmy nomination for his performance as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, while the series received 25 Emmy nominations overall for its second season.
The Pitt is currently streaming on HBO Max. Additional details regarding season three have not yet been announced.
