Nicolas Winding Refn Releases Teaser for New Series ‘Too Old to Die Young’

Danish filmmaker Nicholas Winding Refn released a first teaser for his upcoming television series Too Old to Die Young.

Indiewire recently reported on the series teaser, which Refn posted on Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. The teaser reveals virtually nothing, including no actual footage from the show. Instead, the teaser is more about embodying the classic Nicholas Winding Refn aesthetic, assuring his fans that this series will capture his unique voice. The teaser is simple but electric – The Bollock Brothers’ bumping punk track “The Last Supper” plays in the background while Refn’s name and the series title is laid over fragmented tones of red and green.

Though the teaser gives viewers absolutely nothing to go off of, it still succeeded in piquing interest as fans of Refn across the Internet flocked to the thirty-second teaser. This will be Refn’s second partnership with Amazon Studios, who distributed his latest film last year, The Neon Demon. Refn is known for highly stylized, glossy visuals and dark, gritty thematic content within his work.

Too Old to Die Young will be 10-episode crime drama series, with Refn directing, producing, and co-writing each episode. According to Slashfilm, the series will explore the criminal underbelly of Los Angeles and will star Miles Teller as Martin, a cop mourning his partner’s death. Martin is eventually pulled into the L.A.’s criminal underbelly as he deals with assassins, the Russian mob, gangs, and the Yakuza.

Refn has dealt with the dark underworld of Los Angeles in some of his previous works, including Drive and The Neon Demon. Some also anticipate that Too Old to Die Young will have strong thematic parallels to Refn’s Pusher trilogy, which revolves around the criminal scene in Copenhagen. While Refn has done the brunt of his work in film, he has some experience with television, having previously directed two episodes of the British drama Agatha Christie’s Marple and multiple episodes of Les Italians, a popular crime-thriller television series over in Italy.

Too Old to Die Young has not started filming yet (hence the lack of concrete footage in the teaser). The series is slated to begin filming this fall. Apparently developments must be going well, as Refn’s early teaser presumably indicates his excitement and enthusiasm about the project. A release date has not yet been set for the series, but once the series is completed, all episodes will be able to stream on Amazon Prime.
