Nickelodeon Releases 2020-21 Lineup, Includes ‘SpongeBob’ Prequel

The children’s television network Nickelodeon is bringing back the cast of the wildly popular SpongeBob SquarePants for a new prequel series. The 2020-21 broadcast lineup for the network was recently released, and includes several new spinoff series.

Nickelodeon, which is owned by ViacomCBS, is currently under the leadership of Brian Robbins, the president of the company’s Kids & Family division. The newly announced series mostly expand on existing Nickelodeon properties, and the SpongeBob spinoff is one such series. The spinoff, currently titled Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, will be a CG-animated prequel following a young SpongeBob and his adventures at summer camp. The majority of SpongBob’s original voice cast will be returning for the series, including Tom Kenny as SpongeBob, Bill Fagerbakke as Patrick, and Rodger Bumpass as Squidward.

The spinoff series comes just over a year after the death of SpongeBob series creator Stephen Hillenburg at the age of 57. Since the creator’s passing, few other SpongeBob pieces have been released, including a Broadway musical and a CG-animated film (that happened to feature Keanu Reeves). Kamp Koral is set to premiere on Nickelodeon in July of this year.

Here are all the other new shows coming to Nickelodeon this broadcast season:

  • The Astronauts: 10 episodes following a group of kids who are accidentally launched into space.
  • The Loud House: A Very Loud Christmas: A live-action holiday film based on the popular animated series The Loud House.
  • Big Nate: 26 episodes based on the Lincoln Peirce comic books of the same name.
  • Danger Force: A spinoff series based on the show Henry Danger, focused on the characters Captain Man and Schwoz.

Nickelodeon has also extended the current season of All That and renewed The Casagrandes, Blues Clues and You, Paw Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Bubble Guppies, Top Elf, and Are You Afraid of the Dark?.
