Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) has been rumored to be cast in HBO’s Harry Potter series, and responded to these allegations on a recent panel. According to ComicBook, Frost said “It’s in no way, shape, or form confirmed. I’m thrilled that I would even be considered,” which didn’t confirm or deny the speculation.
The buzz about Frost playing Hagrid started in March. ComicBook reported on HBO’s comment on the rumor, which read “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation. As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”
Frost seems to be egging on the claims, posting a photo on social media with the caption “What a bloody lovely day! It’s happening, it’s actually happening. Stay cool.”

Only one of the Harry Potter adaptation roles has been confirmed, John Lithgow (Conclave, 3rd Rock From the Sun) will be playing Professor Albus Dumbledore. Via ComicBook, production insiders have also mentioned Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Gangs of London) being close to securing the role of Professor Severus Snape, while Janet McTeer is (Albert Nobbs, Ozark) reportedly in talks to play Professor Minerva McGonagall. Though both casting choices are rumored to be almost final, no official confirmation has been made.
The new Harry Potter adaptation series will be streaming on HBO at some point during 2026 but there has not been an official release date set. The show will follow the first book in the J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter complete series, Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them) series, The Sorcerer’s Stone. According to ComicBook, the series requires a lot of work by the filmmaker and crew because of the CGI work required.
No matter when the Harry Potter reboot arrives, major casting announcements appear to be on the horizon. For now, fans can revisit the original film series on Max, and the beloved books remain accessible in print, e-book, and audiobook formats.
