On Monday, during an NFL wild-card playoff game, the new trailer for season three of The Mandalorian was shown for the very first time. After it was shown on the TV broadcast, it debuted online and the video has since gathered a record 83.5 million views, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, that’s the most popular trailer among the Disney+ Star Wars series. Previously, the record was held by the limited series Obi-Wan Kenobi which gathered around 58 million views.
After its debut in November 2019, The Mandalorian, which was created by Jon Favreau (The Book of Boba Fett, Chef), became one of Disney+’s flagship series. Baby Yoda, one of the main characters of the show, became a pop culture icon and one of the most recognized characters in the world of Star Wars. The eagerly awaited second season came out in late 2020 and brought back characters that fans of the movies and previous animated TV shows recognized.
The Mandalorian also served as a medium to reintroduce these characters before sending them into their spinoff shows. Among those shows, there’s The Book of Boba Fett, starring fan-favorite Boba Fett, played by Temuera Morrison (My Life Is Murder, Echo 3), and new bounty hunter Fennec Shand, played by Ming-Na Wen (Mulan, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.). The upcoming Ahsoka series is another resulting spinoff from The Mandalorian where we get to see Ahsoka, played by Rosario Dawson (Jane the Virgin, Luke Cage), interact with Grogu and teach him about the Force.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the third season of The Mandalorian will see Din Djarin, also known as The Mandalorian and played by Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us, Game of Thrones), cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together. The cast for this new season includes Katee Sackhoff (Another Life, Longmire) who will be playing Bo-Katan Kryze; Carl Weathers (Rocky, Chicago Justice) as Greef Karga; Amy Sedaris (No Activity, BoJack Horseman) starring as Peli Motto; Emily Swallow (Supernatural, Castlevania) portraying the Armorer, and Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul, The Boys) returning as Moff Gideon.
The Mandalorian follows Din Djarin who belongs to a group called Mandalorians as he forms a relationship with Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda. Together they travel around the galaxy trying to find someone to teach Grogu how to use the Force. In their travels they encounter enemies that wish them both harm but their allies always come to their help.
The new season of The Mandalorian will premiere on March 1st. Seasons one and two of the show are available on Disney+. Din and Grogu’s storyline also continues in The Book of Boba Fett, also available on Disney+. Don’t forget to watch the trailer for season three below.
