In an Apple TV+ Press Release it has been revealed that the new trailer for the upcoming historical drama staring, written, and produced by Jason Momoa (The Fall Guy, Aquaman) titled Chief of War is now available. The series will make its global debut on Apple TV+ on August 1st, looking to get viewers hooked with two episodes.
The Press Release confirms that the show will follow the warrior named Ka’iana as he fights to unify the Hawaiian Islands before their Western colonization in the late 18th century. The series will be told from the perspective of the indigenous people involved and is said to be a passion project for Mamoa and co-creator Thomas Pa‘a Sibbett (Braven, The Last Manhunt) who both have Hawaiian ancestry. The cast is also said to be a predominantly Polynesian cast. The series was filmed mostly in Hawaii with awesome shots of the lava fields in Kalapana during key battle scenes. A portion was also filmed in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands which was used as a stand in for 18th Century Hawaii.
The new trailer, which can be seen below, shows lots of dramatic shots and primitive warfare with the beautiful islands in the background. The CGI is pristine, the set feels authentic, and the even the island itself seems conflicted as ash spews from the volcano. The indigenous attire feels spot on and the themes of power and legacy ring true.
According to the Press Release, Chief of War is produced by FIFTH SEASON and Chernin Entertainment. Momoa has directed the season finale which isn’t his first venture into the director’s chair. He made his directing debut in 2014 on the set of Road to Paloma, which he also co-wrote and starred in. He is also co-director of his own documentary series, On the Roam.
