According to an official Warner Bros. Discovery Press Release, during Comic-Con in San Diego, it was announced that a new installment in the Rick and Morty universe is forthcoming. The new show will be titled President Curtis and is set to star Keith David (The Princess and the Frog, Armageddon), Stephanie Beatriz (Encanto, Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Jim Rash (Community, Descendants).
The press release reports that David made a surprise appearance during the Rick and Morty panel at Comic Con. David plays the role of President Andre Curtis on the show, which makes it the first official spinoff within the Rick and Morty universe, excluding the anime. Solar Opposites on Hulu is also created by Justin Roiland (Rick and Morty, Solar Opposites), a co-creator of Rick and Morty, but it’s not considered a spin-off as it’s set in an entirely different universe. Roiland was removed from both shows in 2023 after allegations from his then-girlfriend of domestic abuse. The charges were later dropped due to a lack of sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt; however, he was not reinstated for either show.
Per the press release, David had this to say about his character during the Adult Swim panel: “President Curtis has always been a blast to play.” He further elaborated, “Getting to explore his world more deeply in this new series is a dream. I can’t wait for fans to see what kind of chaos he stirs up when Rick isn’t around to steal the spotlight.”
The Warner Bros. press release also disclosed that the President of Adult Swim, Michael Ouweleen, had good things to say about the lead character. “This is a series we would have greenlit even if it didn’t have anything at all to do with Rick and Morty. President Andre Curtis is just that good of a character. The rest of the world the team has fleshed out is super fun and totally stands on its own. We can’t wait for you to see it.”
