Season two of Netflix’s thriller You saw the troubling couple of Joe Goldberg and Love Quinn settle down in the suburbs, and fans are slowly learning more about what characters will occupy their neighborhood and their lives in the show’s third season. In November, whopping twelve cast members were announced, in addition to returning stars Penn Badgley (Gossip Girl, Easy A) and Victoria Pedretti (The Haunting of Bly Manor, Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood), including Tati Gabrielle (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, The 100) and Michaela McManus (One Tree Hill). On Monday, Deadline reported yet another addition to seasons three’s cast in Scott Michael Foster (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Halt and Catch Fire).
The actor, known for his role as Nathaniel Plimpton III on The CW musical dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, will play a television reporter named Ryan in the upcoming third season of You. Deadline describes Ryan as “a well-liked single dad who has overcome history of addiction”. However, as with many of the characters in You, Ryan also has a dark side “including a controlling, calculating demeanor that he reserves for those closest to him and anyone who gets in his way” (Deadline).
Though it is not yet clear just how Ryan will come to know Joe and Love, Entertainment Weekly interjects that “we can already see a few reasons why Joe might not like the guy.” It’s possible that Joe could feel similar to how the characters of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend did upon Foster’s arrival, though it’s more likely he’ll demonstrate his feeling through violence than song and dance.
You is an adaptation of the Caroline Kepnes novels You and Hidden Bodies, though IMDb notes that major deviations from the events of the books begin in the show’s second season. Though both a third season and third book are predicted to debut in 2021, there has yet to be precise dates announced for either. It’s hard to tell whether plotlines in the upcoming season of You will bear any resemblance to those in Kepnes third novel, since producers Sera Gamble (Supernatural, The Magicians) and Greg Berlanti (Supergirl, Riverdale) have started to chart their own course with the show. For now, it seems that Gamble and Berlanti are the sole heirs to the secrets of Foster’s new character Ryan.
Foster shared the good news, about his role on You‘s upcoming third season, on his Instagram Monday by simply saying “here we go 2021″. Former Crazy Ex-Girlfriend cast and crew, including Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), Skylar Astin (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Pitch Perfect), Kathryn Burns (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Key and Peele) and Michael Hitchcock (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Glee), congratulated Foster on Instagram.
