Netflix’s One Piece has begun filming the second season, and fans are eager to know who the actor who will play Portgas D. Ace is. For now, Netflix has announced that Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday, Scream Queens) won’t be part of the second season’s cast. A report from Tuesday morning suggests that the actor who will portray Ace has already been found, according to Comicbook.com.
According to Comicbook.com, the report seems to come from a popular international web series, OUKE, which live-streamed with famous actor Mario Cortijo (El Trufas, Mi Vida Sin Ti). He was asked about actors of different ethnicities who struggle in Hollywood to be noticed. When the topic shifted to Netflix’s One Piece live-action, Cortijo mistakenly shared that Xolo Mariduena (Blue Beetle, Cobra Kai) has been called to play Ace in the second season of the TV series.
“This is to prevent people who think that just because I look like a character or I’m from the same place that I should be cast. Like in One Piece, season two is coming out. They’re [the actor] Lucas Amorim (True Self, Vocacelli) who fans are obsessed with saying he should be Ace because he’s Brazilian who’s actually played by Mariduena who is Mexican. He’s going to play a Brazilian character,” Cortijo explained via Comicbook.com.
The host of the web series joined in by saying, via Comicbook.com, “People just told me about the Xolo, who’s your friend, who just was in Blue Beetle and Cobra Kai, but it seems nobody knew he would be in One Piece.”
Still, there is no official word as of yet from Netflix or Shueisha about whether Mariduena will officially portray the character of Ace in the One Piece live-action. There is no confirmation if the character will appear in season two either. But, according to Comicbook.com, given how the first season skipped a few chapters, it is most likely that the character might appear at the end of season two’s Arabasta saga.
For those who want to start the famous Netflix series, Comicbook.com has available the official synopsis to read below:
“As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But Luffy’s life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…”
The first season of One Piece is now available to stream on Netflix.
